The leak-tightness of a component or system is determined by the application and the acceptable leak rate. There are no completely leak-proof components or systems. A component is technically leak-tight if its leak rate remains below a value specified for that component.
In practice, the leak detector does this by first evacuating the part to be tested, allowing gas from the outside to enter through an existing leak due to the pressure difference. If only helium is applied to the leak (for example, with a spray gun or something similar), it will flow through the leak and be pumped out by the leak detector. A sector mass spectrometer measures the helium partial pressure in the leak detector and displays it as a leak rate. This is usually expressed in terms of helium volume flow (pV-flow). This will allow you to determine the event rate and how large of a leak, and whether or not it needs to be addressed.
